Hi Bryony,
What you want isn't a part of the UK template (It might be one day).
I'd suggest you have a look at the MZMT Shipping Module.
Here's the thread url
http://www.zen-cart.com/modules/ipb/ind … topic=9924

As far as I remember this mod will do all you want.

Thanks for the update.

Be aware that the UK template uses the 'classic' template as it's basis.  I assumed that as the ZC team had included it in 1.3 that they had 'tested' it.

I'm now finding that the classic template has a few weird things going on with it and I should have based it on the 'default' template set.

The key differences are that the css files in the UK template are causing difficulty during customisation.

What I did in the end was rename all of the css files <name>.css.original and then copied the css files accross from the default template css folder.

It looks REALLY ugly when you do it but in the long run you'll get less customising troubles.

It MAY be this that's causing trouble with your linux system .... but who knows.

If you've installed the UK mod files then your site should be configured for UK date and time.

It's one of the things that the mod does.  When you go to create account you should see that by the DOB field the wording says (eg. 21/05/1970) instead of (05/21/1970).

If you don't see this:

a] check that you have selected the UK template from your template options
b] check that you've actually uploaded the files.

If you still have problems, post again.

Thanks for the feedback - I'll update the sql file tomorrow.

Have you uploaded all of the files from the folders 'admin' & 'Includes'?
The sql files add the finishing touches.

Let me know how you get on

Kev

If you can think of a way I can improve the current UK template to cater for people like yourself who already have thier own template but just want to make it UK friendly, please let me know.

This isn't the first time this has come up and although I've racked my brain to find a simpler solution - I've come up blank.

Glad yo got there though.

Kev

Hi Andy,
Depending on the changes you've made to your current template, it shouldn't be too difficult to combine the two.

In the zip file you downloaded is a file called 'changed_files.txt' which details the files used for the uktemplate.

If you haven't customised any of those files, it's just a case of changing the folders named 'uktemplate' to the name of your template and then uploading the files in the normal way and overwriting your existing files.

In your case, there should be no need to upload any of the files in /includes/languages/english/html_includes/uktemplate/

I'd suggest that you use winmerge to determine the changes in /includes/languages/uktemplate/english.php  (where uktemplate is the name of your template) as this is the most common file that people modify.

Not knowing how far you've got with setting up your template and what your 'missing pieces' are, makes it difficult to help with explaining your sql file.  But I'd hazzard a guess that you can run the sql file and it will sort most things out for you.  The only part of the instuctions you wouldn't need to do is select the 'uktemplate' from the available templates.  The remain sql shouldn't cause a problem.

As with any mod or change I'd make sure that you back-up your existing database and all of the files from Zen Cart.

I hope this helps.  If you need more info please repost.

* convert customer-entered names and addresses to proper case (i.e. capitalised first letters)

* this contribution takes in to account 'unusual' name formats (e.g. MacDonald, Jon's L'Hotel, etc.).

* it allows for different formatting conventions depending on person name or address.

* it allows easy addition of exceptions to the global rules

* easy to install, a few lines of code added to one core file

I love forums.

Thanks for the clarrification Asgard2k!  I'll make a few changes to the current files.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for your suggestion .

There was a contribution somewhere in the ZC forums that gave us the switch/maestro functions, but it was never updated.  I'll add your request to my 'can do' list.

Stay tuned

Kev

Thanks for all of your feedback so far.
I've made a few changes based on what I've been told.

One thing that has me stummped and I need your thoughts on.

Should kilogrammes be

KG or kg  (uppercase or lower case)

In another post, Graham, one of the forum members.  Suggested that I put together a list of useful Open Source programmes that I recommend.

This has to be the first on my list.  POPFile

POPFile automatically sorts your messages and fights spam.
http://popfile.sourceforge.net/

POPFile won a Productivity Award at the 2005 Jolt Awards
In a short time, POPFile can achieve amazing accuracy - The Washington Post
It works for me - Kevin Polley

Basically you download POPFile.
Install it on your PC.
Set it up by following the instructions.

It sits between your email client (outlook etc) and your POP3 email account.
Before you get the email in your client POPFile classifies the messages, tossing them into buckets, according to your personal needs and requirements.

Basically you train it to your way of thinking.

For example:  You get lots of spam email offering you Viagra.  You teach POPFile by 'clicking a button' that this email is spam.
You do this for a week or two with every email you get.
Pretty soon POPFile starts to classify your spam as spam.

I send you an email which is a joke about Viagra but you still get to read it smile
Why?

Because the magic of POPFile has worked out that other emails 'I' sent you, you classified as maybe 'work' 'friend' etc and based on POPFiles logic, you'll want to read that email.

Basically it looks at every part of every email and breaks it down.  It assigns values to words, phrases, IP addresses, etc etc and then runs a calculation to decide what it thinks an email type is.

If POPFile gets it wrong you correct it and it adds a 'balance' to further calculations based on your input.

It takes a while to be really efective but once it's trained it's REALLY good.
Here's my accuracy classification since Jan 4th 2004 to today.

Classification Accuracy
Messages classified:     150,981
Classification errors:     1,082
Accuracy:     99.28%
(Last Reset: Sun Jan 4 20:29:07 2004 )

AND .... it would be MUCH higher IF these figures only related to the actual *spam* mis-classifications.  These are below.
               False Positives    False Negatives
spam                293                      641

Many of the classification 'errors' I corrected - I didn't need to.  I was just being finicky about the 'type' of spam I was getting.

Being fair to POPFile - I'd say after processing 151,000 emails it's more like 99.8% accurate.

Go get it and try it yourself.

This BETA UK ZenCart Template System, breaks down the United Kingdom into the following countries and adds them to your database:-
* Northern Ireland
* Scotland
* Wales
* England
* Isle Of Man
* Channel Islands

The 'normal' United Kingdom (222) Country is still there and has all of the above (except the Channel Islands) contained within it's zone.

The Channel Islands are eperated as they fall outside the scope of UK and EC VAT.

This template structure allows for better customer service if you operate in only one country and should assist in distribution for goods sold.

I've got to stress that this is a BETA version and still needs testing and user input.  Although you could use it with a new 1.2.7 set-up in a live environment I'd suggest you test it first.

You can  download the UK ZenCart Template 0.8 Beta here.

Please remember this is a BETA version and to back-up your database and file structure.

If you have any feedback or suggestions for improvement please let me know.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for joining the forum and taking part.

Try as I might I'm a slooooooooooow writer and I can't seem to find a good way of explaining what Mind Mapping is and What it can be used for.

Any chance you could help everyone discover the benefits of mind mapping by explaining a few ways of using it?

Thanks
Kev

Hi Graham,
I'm going to ask an old direct mailing mate of mine to try and get over his technophobia and see if he can't help shed more light on the dark art of Mind Mapping.

I've got to say he is the original 'old git' and he's got the badge to prove it wink

Your Idea about putting together a list of open source material is a great one.  It won't happen overnight and I'll have to decide how to publish it - but I'll get there.

If you can think of any forum groups that are 'missing' feel free to share your ideas.

That's the beauty of Zen Cart - anything is possible.

Hi Phaeton, thanks for posting.  While your post isn't a request or suggestion that will  'directly' go in to affect the UK template I'm going to leave it here.  Two reasons.
1.   It will get people thinking about what they do want to see in the UK Zen Cart Template System and 2. ....  I can't work out how to move the post smile  ... Yet.

I like the business idea and I can tell you that there are quite a few feed delivery businesses in Essex and Suffolk, so someone is making money from it.  Also I agreed with you - it would be an interesting ZC contribution.

Don't panic about your skill levels with PHP etc, part of the fun is the learning experience ... and then if you ever want commercial help to help speed things up, you can find it.

Thinking about it, (other readers note) this type of question would be better in the General Chit Chat section.

I'm off to find a 'move mod' for the forum - aint Open Source great?

Kev

P.S.  I Just found a mod which allowed me to move the post to here smile

For the next release of the UK Template I'm planning on modifying the way the UK is displayed.

Below you will see what I think is a comprehensive list of counties that make up the UK and ROI.  I have then broken the list down into it's respective countries.

All of the counties below that make up the UK will still be associated with The United Kingdom but then I plan to add Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales The Channel Islands etc as 'new' countries to the Database and then associate the counties to each country.

This is a comprehensive list compiled from a number of old and new lists.

Are there any I've missed?
Are there any that don't need to be included?
What are your thoughts on this?
Is it going too far?

We all know that Zen Cart 1.3 is due for release at some point in the (hopefully) near future.  And reading through the many posts about what 1.3 will and won't cater for, we can assume that some of the changes the current UK template make will be available as a 'core' component.

I'm hoping that the issue of converting 'lbs' in to 'KGs' in the various pages that use it will be resolved.
I'm hopeful that the promised overhaul of the Tax calculation and presentation will be resolved and many other little 'niggles' we here in the UK contend with.

One of the sticking points I don't think we will get resolved, is having an option to install a UK site 'out of the box'.  The reason behind this thought is that our government keep changing 'local' boundries and renaming them.  As such it's not practicle to commit options that may change into the core installation data-base.

Another issue to contend with is that currently the Post Office use 'Postal Towns' and 'Post Codes' as key identifiers in addressing.  It's worked well for years but Zen Cart doesn't use these 'identifiers' as primary fields.

What with the end of the Post Office monopoly on UK postage, I can see a real opening for using Zen Cart's zone capabilites to reduce distribution costs accross the UK as new couriers spring up to provide 'regional' distribution services.  i.e.  a new Scottish company may give preferential pricing if they deliver only to other Scottish companies.

So ... what improvements do you want to see as a UK Zen Cart user?

Mind mapping has been around for years and it's benefits have been used by hundreds of thousands of entreprenures worldwide.

Normally I grab a piece of paper and just, go for it.  The results always amaze me!

So it should come as no surprise to find that some very bright sparks have spent an awful lot of time and effort in digitising the Mind Mapping process.

You'll find paid for programmes buy just running the search term 'mind mapping' in any search engine and you'll also find the very popular open source programme FreeMind

I have to confess I'm still learning about it's capabilities, so please chip in with your thoughts and comments or even download this 'free' software for yourself and use it.

Here's the url again FreeMind - http://freemind.sourceforge.net

Thanks
